Clay holds its colour for the life of the roof because the colour is fired into the body of the tile rather than applied to it. We supply seven clay ranges, from traditional Staffordshire plain tiles through to the largest format interlocking tiles on the market.

Plain tiles: Dreadnought

Dreadnought have been making clay tiles in Staffordshire since 1805 from Etruria Marl, and are recognised as one of the best quality clay tile manufacturers in the world. The colours — Staffordshire Blue, Blue Brindle, Brown Antique, Brown Brindle, Country Brown, Red Blue Blend and Plum Red — come from the clay and the firing rather than from artificial pigments, which is why a Dreadnought roof ages rather than fades.

Both smooth and sand-faced finishes are available. Plain tiling is the traditional double-lap covering across much of England, and it is the specification most often required where a roof is being repaired or extended in a Conservation Area.

Interlocking tiles: Snowdon, Shetland and Sperrin

Snowdon is a large format interlocking tile with a riven surface and dressed edges designed to read as natural slate, in Slate Black and Heather Blue, at 10 tiles per m² with a 50 year guarantee. Shetland takes the same large format in a smooth, clean finish with a thin leading edge, in five colours, and is aimed at replacing fibre cement and man-made slate.

Sperrin is a Marseilles style tile engineered for low pitches — down to 12.5 degrees — with deep channels that make it exceptionally watertight, in Red and Graphite. Where a roof has a shallow pitch that rules out natural slate, this is usually the first tile we suggest.

XL formats and Terreal

Snowdon XL and Shetland XL are double-sized versions at 510 x 457mm, needing only 5.5 tiles per m². On a large, plain roof area that halves the number of pieces a roofer handles, and both carry the same low pitch capability of 12.5 degrees and 50 year guarantee as their standard-sized counterparts. Snowdon XL adds Reclaimed Heather Blue and Irish Green to the colour choice.
