Choosing the format for the room

Mini stacked stone is the small format — 400mm by 100mm pieces, 6mm to 15mm thick, twelve to a box covering 0.432m². The deliberately uneven face throws a shadow line every hundred millimetres, which is what makes a narrow chimney breast or an alcove look considered rather than tiled. It is the right choice for smaller areas seen close up.

ZClad panels are 215mm by 600mm, three to a box covering 0.36m². The bigger module and the interlocking Z joint make a long wall go up quickly with a joint you cannot pick out from across the room. For a full lounge wall, a stairwell or a commercial reception, that speed and evenness usually wins.

Lighting a stone wall

Texture only exists where there is a shadow, so the lighting decides how much of the stone you actually see. Light grazing down the face from a slot or a recessed batten a short distance out from the wall picks up every course. A downlight sitting directly against the wall does the same. A ceiling light in the middle of the room lights the wall flat and wastes the relief you paid for.

Plan the lighting before the stone goes up, because chasing cables into a finished stone wall is an unpleasant job. The same applies to sockets, switches, TV brackets and cable routes — mark them out first and cut the pieces around them.

Substrate and preparation

Stone is heavy and unforgiving of a poor background. The substrate has to be sound, flat, dry and capable of carrying the weight — plasterboard on dabs is often not, and may need boarding out or a mechanically fixed board first. Remove wallpaper, seal dusty surfaces and prime where the adhesive manufacturer requires it.

Set out from a level datum rather than from the floor, which is rarely level, and dry-lay a couple of square metres first to spread the tonal variation. Call us with your wall build-up and area before ordering and we will confirm the preparation and quantity.
