On a large plain elevation, ZClad panels cover ground fastest. The Z profile means each course locks into the one below with no open bed joint to line through, so a long run stays straight and the finished wall reads evenly from the road. Eleven colourways cover quartz, slate and granite.
Where the building sits among older stone — a village street, a conversion, an extension to a period house — slips are usually the better answer. They are individual pieces of solid stone in regional limestones, sandstones, slate, quartz and ironstone, laid to a coursing style that can be matched to the neighbours.
Purpose-made corner pieces are available for every product on this page. They matter because a mitred cut on an external corner shows a fine dark seam that catches the eye from a distance, while a corner piece returns the stone around the angle so it reads as solid walling.
Openings are the second giveaway. Window and door reveals, cills and heads need planning before the order goes in, and a cill that throws water clear of the face keeps the wall below it clean. Copings and a proper stop at the top of the cladding prevent water getting behind the stone, which is the single most common cause of trouble on a clad elevation.
The wall behind the cladding has to be sound, flat and load-bearing, and the adhesive has to suit both the stone and the background. On exposed and coastal sites, the detailing at the head, base and openings is what keeps the water out — the stone itself is not the weak point.
