"I'd seen Mark Chandler mentioned on here loads of times with good reviews, so I gave him a ring last week. Super knowledgeable, asked all the right questions about our requirements – even wanted to see a picture of the original slates for comparison. He knew what he was talking about. The builder rang me Friday saying the slates would be 2 weeks out. I told him they land this week or I can't do it – got a large farm job booked for the next 5 months. He rang Mark and they were on site at 8am the next morning. I have no ties to Mark, we've only ever spoken on the phone. This guy is a credit to our trade. I'm sick of buying 1000 slates from merchants and sending 300-400 back. These are the nicest Spanish I have ever laid – and I'm 52, laid too many roofs to remember. Our industry is crying out for people like Mark. First order this week, and I'm giving him the chance on 5,000 new Welsh next year. I'll be buying my slate from Mark Chandler from now on. We need more knowledgeable people like him in this industry."

Request SamplesWe stock Spanish slate from Galicia, Ourense and La Bana, Welsh slate, Brazilian and Canadian slate and Chinese slate, alongside clay roof tiles, reproduction slates and natural roofing stone. Each has a different colour, texture, thickness and price, and we will talk you through the options for your roof.
It depends on the slate size and the headlap your roof pitch and exposure call for — a 600x300mm slate covers far more per piece than a 400x200mm one. Send us the roof dimensions, the pitch and the location and we will calculate the slate count and the batten gauge with your quotation.
As a general guide natural slate is laid from around 20 to 25 degrees upwards, with the headlap increased as the pitch drops and on exposed or coastal sites. We confirm the headlap for your specific pitch and exposure when we quote.
It is the European standard for roofing slate. W1 is the highest water absorption rating, T1 the highest thermal cycling rating and S1 the highest sulphur dioxide exposure rating, so a W1 T1 S1 slate has performed at the top grade in all three tests.
Spanish slate is the most widely used natural slate in the UK and offers excellent value with proven performance over decades. Welsh slate is quarried in the UK, carries a distinctive heather or blue-grey colour and sits at a higher price point. Both are natural slate; the choice is usually driven by budget, planning requirements and matching an existing roof.
